CBG, the mother molecule
CBG (cannabigerol) is the precursor to all other cannabinoids: in its acidic form (CBGA), it is from this that the plant synthesizes CBD, THC, and the rest. Hence its nickname "mother molecule." Paradoxically, because it transforms into something else during growth, it often remains present at less than 1% in the mature flower, making it rare and more expensive to extract.
What recent research says about CBG
In 2024, the first controlled human clinical trial tested 20 mg of hemp-derived CBG on 34 healthy adults. Participants reported a decrease in perceived anxiety 20, 45, and 60 minutes after intake, with no signs of intoxication or cognitive slowing (Cuttler et al., Scientific Reports, 2024). This is an encouraging first step, but a single small trial does not make an established truth.
On the preclinical side (lab, animal models), CBG is studied for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. These avenues still need to be confirmed in humans on a larger scale.
In practice, CBG primarily interests those seeking an alternative to CBD for daytime use: early user feedback suggests a "clear" profile, without drowsiness. But be honest with yourself—we're talking about a cannabinoid still young in science, whose biology is better understood than its optimal daily use.
CBN, born from aging THC
CBN (cannabinol) is not produced directly by the plant: it appears when THC oxidizes and degrades under the effect of time, heat, and light. An old flower forgotten in a drawer therefore contains more CBN than a fresh flower. It is the "end-of-life" cannabinoid of the THC molecule—and it retains very low psychoactivity, incomparable to that of THC.
CBN and sleep: what we really know
CBN has a reputation as a "sleep cannabinoid." This needs an honest nuance. In 2024, the most robust objective study, conducted at the University of Sydney, showed that CBN increases sleep—but in rats, not yet in humans. A small human trial in 2023 (20 mg, single dose) observed fewer nocturnal awakenings in a limited sample. In short: the avenue is serious, but clinical evidence remains limited. Do CBG or CBN get you high like THC?
